How to control your subconscious mind Part#1 – Meditation

Over the next few posts I will go over techniques I have learned on how to control your subconscious mind! They can be a bit contradictory, but don’t get mad at me, I am just learning, same as you. So let’s try them together and see what we get.

Part#1 Of course we were going to get to this….

The benefits of meitation are countless.

And you if think that you need to the an ancient bearded guy, in a cool orange robe in the top of a mountain to do it, you are wrong! If you really want to learn how to control your subconscious mind, we need to start this the right way…

My First Encounter With Awareness

When I first decided to learn to meditate I had this idea of sitting still and having my mind go completely blank. I then walked to the book store and purchsed “Meditation”, by Osho, by the way, any book by this guy is a great read.

How great wasn’t my disappointment when he started speaking of being aware of what you are doing instead of giving me a clear step-by-step on how to blank my mind? (when you get to know me, you will find out I am a step-by-step junkie, I love knowing exactly what I am supposed to do to get a result ).

Instead, he went on and on about: if you are eating, eat! If you are talking, talk! If you are driving, drive!

An I was like “Well that is a load of crap, well done on wasting those $25, Marina”.

I couldn’t have been more wrong. But now I know…

After All, What is Meditation?

“Meditation: The First and Last Freedom shows that meditation is not a spiritual discipline separate from everyday life in the real world. In essence, it is simply the art of being aware of what is going on inside and around us.”  (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/97009.Meditation)

He did explain it in the book, but, back then, I was too young, arrogant and eager to pay attention.

Meditation is the art of being aware, the art of being present in the moment, of doing what you are doing with your whole being and not letting your mind wonder to the past or the future.

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the “present”. (Jonathan Aibel and Glen Berger, Kung Fu Panda, 2008).

When you are daydreaming about what will be, what has been, what you are doing later and what you could have done before, your subconscious mind has the steering wheel and it takes you wherever it wants.

If you read my previous post, you know that your subconscious mind is where all your fears, insecurities and hidden beliefs reside, so when you are not aware, they start rulling your life…

But when you are focused in the present, you are controling your mind, it is not controlling you.

Ta-Daaaaaaa….

Cool, we are finally getting somewhere!

Let’s rewind to make it clear:

  • Your mind creates your reality.
  • 95% of your thinking is done normally by your subconscious mind, so your SUBCONSCIOUS mind creates your reality.
  • When you are aware, though, there is no room for you subconcious mind. You are alert so your consciuos mind is creating your reality.
  • Your conscious mind is created and controlled by you, therefore…
  • When you are aware, YOU are creating your life.

Does it make sense?

This is not about shutting your subconscious mind completely, because it is impossible, but about not making all the decisions, taking action and believing in feelings you don’t fully understand.

Your Exercise

Over the next few days I would like you to practice being aware (I will do it too, so we can talk about our results).

It is literally, when you are eating, eat! When you are talking, talk! When you are driving, driving (by far the hardest for me)!

Everytime you see your mind has wondered, you gently try to bring it back to the present. Sometimes it will wonder and you won’t even notice it for the next couple of hours, and that is absolutely normal, that’s why it is a practice. Doesn’t happen over night.

When you have a feeling, try to understand were it is coming from. You will likely find out that most of your negative feelings have to do with the past of the future. So when you notice that, aknowlegde them and put the aside, you are focusing on the now.

(Guys, of course if you having a pressing matter that is in regards to the future, but it requires action now, do it! This is not meant for you to be zen and stop paying rent, simply to not worry about what cannot be changed at that moment. ok?)

Having said that, with this practice alone you should feel a significant improvement in your anxiety levels. It doesn’t seem like much, especially if you are like me and love a procedure, but this is pure meditation.

We Are Ready To Start!

Now you know what to do, you don’t have to sit in silence or chant (even though the book will also teach you how to do that) in order to start quieting your mind, you just need to try to be aware (and it is MUCH easier said then done!! So, good luck to all of us).

Like I said, this is only one of the techniques I know and I will bring you others so you can try them out.

Some will work better for some, others will work better for others. But I honestly can’t think of a contraindication to being in the present, so give this a good go before you decide it is not good enough and it won’t change your mind.

And don’t take only my word for it, see it for yourself.
