I still remember the first time I was introduced to the concept of mind creating your own reality.
Wait, maybe second. I had read the book “The Secret” when I was very young, but I had gone about it all wrong and, to be fair, the book was highly innovative at the time, but it is not necessarily accurate on the theory (as far as I have more recently learned).
Anyway, it was a talk by a guy called Gasparetto (unfortunately, my mother tongue is Portuguese, so a lot of my sources are not available in English) and for the first time I was being exposed to the idea that we are actually responsible for attracting everything in our lives and not victims of destiny or God’s will.
So this post is for you that still don’t know or at least don’t fully understand the concept of “your subconscious mind creates your reality”.
The Law of Attraction and its Misconceptions
When the book “The Secret” was released it was a revolution. At least I think it was (in my twelve year old mind, nobody had ever said anything remotely similar to that).
Before that, or at least long before that, people were led to believe we were just pawns in the hands of fate. Religions were the first to preach “God’s will” as an absolute certainty because, as I mentioned in my previous post, having people empowered by the fact that they control their lives is not interesting to tyrants that want to control masses.
So, when “The Secret” brought us the concept of the “Law of Attraction” I think most people were really skeptical.
If you are not familiar with it, the Law of Attraction basically says that you attract what you think.
And it is true in so many ways, but I remember a passage in the book of a woman creating her ideal weight with her mind and that was huge to me back then, so I kept days and nights telling myself I was a certain weight and that did not work! I also tried to use it to get back with an ex-boyfriend, by telling myself AND OTHERS (oh, the shame!!) that I knew, I WAS SURE, we were going to get back together and, of course, that also did not happen (thank goodness).
The thing is, your thoughts do create your reality, but it is not what you think you think that works, but what you really think!
Your Conscious and Your Subconscious Mind
I want you to think of your mind as two separate things: your conscious and your subconscious mind.
Your conscious mind is working when you are awake and alert. So if you are studying, having a conversation or writing a post on your blog, that is your conscious mind. Your conscious mind is creative and problem solving, you learn through it and you can choose to tell yourself things by using it.
Your subconscious mind is what happens when you are not making an effort to focus. It rules all your bodily functions, it stores memories of everything that happens to you and, most importantly, your deepest beliefs, some you are not even aware of. Your subconscious mind is not creative though, it only receives information and replays it, it doesn’t filter information either, all filtering is done by your conscious mind.
“According to cognitive neuroscientists, we are conscious of only about 5 percent of our cognitive activity, so most of our decisions, actions, emotions, and behavior depends on the 95 percent of brain activity that goes beyond our conscious awareness.”
That means that you can keep trying to change your reality by using your conscious mind, you can try to have positive thoughts, you can try to picture the outcomes that you desire for a certain situation, but, most of the time you are being ruled by underlying thoughts and feelings imprinted so deep in your being, that you don’t even notice are there.
For example, you can tell yourself every day looking in the mirror that you are ready and you want a loving committed relationship. But if, deep down, you don’t actually believe that you are worthy of love, you will not be able to manifest the relationship you so desire.
If you dream of being rich and having a brilliant quality of life, but you don’t truly think that is a possibility for you, maybe because you grew up hearing that life is hard and money is for the few lucky ones that are born with it, then you will not be able to attract that for yourself.
Dig Deep Into Yourself!
So if we believe that you attract what you think, and 95% of the time you are not conscious of what you think, I think it is safe to say that your subconscious mind creates your reality, not your conscious mind.
In order to start understanding why things are happening the way they are happening to you, I highly recommend you start asking yourself questions you never have.
Ask what are you feeling, then ask why, then ask if that feeling corresponds to the reality of the situation. I find that is the best way is start getting to know, to then be able to change, what is hiding in your subconscious mind.
There are also tools and exercises to help you with that and I will do my best to bring them up one by one, but the main point is…
You Can do Anything…
You have an incredibly powerful tool at your disposal 24/7, it is constantly creating everything you see, your interactions, your relationships, your income, whether you want it or not.
Or may choose to have nothing to do with it and let your fears, insecurities and outdated beliefs dictate your future or you can decide to truly and deeply understand yourself and be able to change your destiny like you change your socks.
Your subconscious minds creates your reality, if you control your subconscious mind, you can do anything.
